The letter comes as activists for tighter oversight of arms sales to foreign countries staged a demonstration in the Rose Garden in front of the Knesset on Tuesday evening.

The rabbis oppose religious men serving in close quarters to women, seeing it as contravening a religious lifestyle and even as endangering their religious identity.

The video has a voiceover by female soldiers repeating frequent claims by rabbis in the religious Zionist movement, such as that women have no physical strength.

Gabbay also castigated hard-line rabbis for their silence in the face of corruption by public officials on the Right.

The campaign involves high-school girls getting photographed with a message calling on the Education Ministry “not to interfere” with their education.

The Yesh Atid chairman referenced conservative national-religious rabbis who are campaigning against mixed-gender service and enlistment of religious women.

"We are surprised and disappointed that you allow a public official to use his public status in order to work against the legitimacy of women’s service in the IDF and against female equality."
