HIT President Prof. Eduard Yakubov emphasized Israel’s urgent need for 80,000 applied science engineers and called for national unity through STEM education, innovation, and social responsibility.

World-renowned journalist Thomas Friedman, Head of Science at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Prof. Stephen Quake, and climate policy expert Prof. Miranda Schreurs among this year’s honorees.

The program notably had controversial teachings about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but university authorities maintain that the curriculum was not antisemitic.

The defacement occurred as the federal government has sought to push academic institutions, including Northwestern, to adopt new policies to address campus antisemitism and radicalism.

"We would reject any agreement that would require us to relinquish our independence and autonomy as an educational institution," acting president Claire Shipman said on Monday.
