Although the talks aren't meant to put a full stop to the US-Iran conflict, mediators hope that a temporary agreement to reopen the strait would accelerate talks for a more concrete deal.

Approval of the conflict has been below 40% since the US and Israel launched strikes on February 28, a stark contrast to the opening months of other recent conflicts.

Former senior defense official Avner Vilan said on Monday that Washington and Tehran remain caught between an agreement and full-scale war, while renewed fighting could intensify criticism of Israel.

“We’re locked and loaded,” Trump told reporters on Friday about the possibility of continuing the attacks against Iran, while no new strikes were reported during the day.

“The central danger is miscalculation. The conflict could become region-wide with very little warning,” founder of Q Advisory John Keith King said.

US Democrats object to the ongoing and deeply unpopular war with Iran, which the Pentagon said has cost the US $37.5 billion so far.

The threat of attacking the Iranian site reflects escalating tensions as Tehran and Washington trade fire in the Gulf, setting back efforts to end the conflict.

The mediators, including senior Qatari, Egyptian, Omani, and Pakistani officials, have presented the proposal to the United States.

"The principle of the matter is clear: mediators are working and trying to prevent tension from escalating," Baghaei explained.
