While Iran shuts down its internet, Starlink defies the ban, keeping some Iranians connected during the ongoing crackdown on protests.

The flow of information from Iran has been hampered by an internet blackout since Thursday amid the most expansive protests against the country's clerical establishment since 2022.

US President Donald Trump has decided to assist Iranian protesters, sources said, as Washington debates military, cyber, and communications support options amid escalating unrest.

The inquiry surfaced as internet monitors and media reported near-total connectivity loss across Iran, renewing attention on satellite internet as a tool to bypass state shutdowns.

This comes after Starlink said in December that one of its satellites experienced an anomaly in space, creating a "small" amount of debris and cutting off communications with the spacecraft.

The number of US users reporting issues fell below 1,000 as of 1:15 a.m. ET, down from a peak of more than 43,000, Downdetector said.

Starlink, the satellite internet firm led by billionaire Elon Musk, will now be able to provide internet services nationwide, which ranks among the countries with the slowest internet speeds.
