The regime appears to be trying to prevent a widespread outbreak of protests by reinforcing its presence on the ground, according to Effi Banai, a lecturer and researcher of social networks.

"It's the same centuries-old stereotypes and blood libels, repackaged by replacing ' Jews' with 'Zionists," said Israel's ambassador to Sweden Ziv Nevo Kulman.

The petitions involve wartime restrictions on anti-war demonstrations and the number of worshippers allowed at the Western Wall.
