The multibillion-dollar trial will determine whether the Israeli company contributed to an opioid crisis that has caused more than 500,000 deaths over the past two decades.

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd was facing claims that they fueled an opioid epidemic in Texas by improperly marketing addictive pain medications.

The CDC reports that at least 100,000 people died of a drug overdose in the United States between May 2020 and May 2021. 

New York and Nassau and Suffolk counties had accused the Israel-based drugmaker of engaging in misleading marketing practices that fueled opioid addiction in the state.

Opioid overdoses have become a health crisis, with mortality increasing over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the study.

The lawsuit was originally filed in April, when several California counties accused drugmakers of fueling America's opioid crisis.

“My congregants trust me. Who am I to not trust them? I feel like I’m honoring that trust by telling them something like this about myself,” Rabbi Michael Perice said.

The man was discovered by his family days later. He had jaundice, nausea, diarrhea, extreme confusion (unclear whether that was due to the mushrooms or not) and was vomiting blood.

In the US, one in 12 adults suffers from substance use disorder – that’s 18.7 million Americans struggling with this chronic medical condition.

“The normalization of cannabis in our society directly endangers its most vulnerable members: children,” said Dr Miriam Adelson.
