The UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said two of its members were killed in southern Lebanon on Monday after an explosion of "unknown origin" destroyed their vehicle.
It said a third peacekeeper was severely wounded and another was also injured in the incident, which took place near the Bani Haiyyan municipality.
The incident is the second in 24 hours after a UNIFIL peacekeeper was killed when a projectile exploded at one of its positions in a southern Lebanese village.
United Nations peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix on Monday told reporters that two peacekeepers who were killed were Indonesian.
"This is the second fatal incident in the last 24 hours," UNIFIL said in a statement. "We reiterate that no one should ever have to die serving the cause of peace. We extend our sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of those brave peacekeepers who gave their lives in service of peace."
Indonesian UN peacekeeper killed in Lebanon, origin of the projectile unclear
UNIFIL said a peacekeeper was killed when a projectile exploded at one of its positions near the southern Lebanese village of Adchit al-Qusayr on Sunday.
Another peacekeeper was critically injured, it said in a statement early on Monday.
Indonesia's foreign ministry said on Monday the deceased peacekeeper was one of its citizens and that three others were injured by indirect artillery fire in the vicinity of the Indonesian UNIFIL contingent's position near Adchit al-Qusayr.
"We do not know the origin of the projectile. We have launched an investigation to determine all of the circumstances," UNIFIL said.
