IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir ordered a freeze on the implementation of mandatory service commitments for combat soldiers in special forces units on Sunday, the military said.

He also directed the establishment of a review team on the matter. According to the IDF, no soldier in these units will be required to serve beyond the commitment they agreed to upon enlistment.

Zamir held a discussion on the matter on Saturday night regarding expanding the implementation of extended service commitments for IDF combat soldiers in special forces units within the ground forces.

It was clarified during the meeting that this is not a decision to extend service for all combat soldiers, nor is it an extension of mandatory service for soldiers in the relevant units.

Rather, it pertains to the completion of the additional service period (the standing army year) to which soldiers enlisting in these ground forces units commit in advance, as is customary in such special units, the IDF noted.

This is a developing story.
