The story of HStern began in 1945, when Hans Stern, a young man who fled Germany to Brazil following the events of Kristallnacht, established his first workshop in Rio de Janeiro with a modest investment of $400, the amount he received for the accordion he brought with him. What began as a small dream driven by a deep love for gemstones quickly evolved into an international jewelry brand that remains family-owned to this day and is managed from its headquarters in Rio.

Over eight decades, the brand has specialized in the design, production, and marketing of 18-karat gold jewelry and luxury watches, establishing itself as one of the world’s five leading luxury jewelry companies. Today, HStern operates more than 70 stores across four continents, alongside its iconic flagship store in New York.

The Stern family has always shared a special connection with Israel, then a young state, which they visited frequently. During one visit, then-finance minister Pinhas Sapir sought to encourage investment by the Jewish-Brazilian family and granted approval, written on a napkin, to open a duty-free store at Lod Airport. The airport store opened in 1963, followed shortly by another store at the Hilton Tel Aviv Hotel. Both remain in operation today. Since then, the brand has expanded in Israel to 11 locations in shopping malls, hotels, and Ben-Gurion Airport, where it is considered the longest-standing concessionaire in the field.

Following the passing of Hans Stern in 2007, his son Roberto Stern assumed leadership as company president and chief creative officer. Under his guidance, the brand underwent a conceptual shift that placed collection design at its core. Rather than focusing exclusively on gemstones, HStern began creating themed collections inspired by art, architecture, nature, history, and haute couture. Some collections emerged from distinctive collaborations with cultural leaders such as Diane von Fürstenberg, architect Oscar Niemeyer, the Corpo dance company, and landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx.

The emphasis on unique design, modern aesthetics, and meticulous craftsmanship has made HStern a favorite among international celebrities, who frequently wear the jewelry at red carpet events, ceremonies, and gala evenings. The brand’s vision is built on four core principles: inspired design with a story, versatility that allows jewelry to be worn in multiple ways, maximum comfort for the wearer, and the brand’s signature, the star engraved on the back of every piece, symbolizing craftsmanship quality and the meaning of the name Stern, “star” in German. Like the star that serves as its iconic emblem, H. Stern continues to shine after 80 years, remaining a brand that bridges tradition and creativity, luxury and innovation through refined, timeless design.
