Former Israeli ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan announced on Tuesday that the new right-wing party he heads will be called the Unity Party, unveiling the name during an event in Beit Shemesh marking MK Aliza Bloch's joining the party.
The party's slogan will be "Real right. Real enlistment."
"I am proud to announce here, in Beit Shemesh: The name of our party is 'Unity.' The Unity Party. Not because we agree on everything. But because we have no other choice," Erdan stated.
"Unity means enlistment by everyone. Unity means shared responsibility. Unity is our path, unity is our commitment, unity - is our name! And we will fight for it without compromise!"
Party launched with former Likud member MK Yuli Edelstein
Erdan launched the party just last week, vowing right-wing principles and universal IDF conscription, alongside MK Yuli Edelstein, who recently left Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling Likud Party.
At the party’s launch in Tel Aviv, Erdan laid out policies calling for haredi (ultra-Orthodox) conscription to the IDF amid the military’s severe manpower shortage.
He called for a Basic Law requiring all Israeli citizens to perform either military or national service. “The law will establish a simple principle: In the State of Israel, every citizen has rights, but also responsibilities,” he said.
Regarding who he would sit in a coalition with, Erdan pledged that his party would not join what he called a “narrow government.”
