A man armed with a machete wounded three people at Grand Central Station on Saturday morning, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed in a post to X/Twitter, adding that all victims are currently in stable condition in the hospital.
After refusing to drop the machete, police officers shot the armed man. He was later pronounced dead.
"I’m grateful to the NYPD for their quick response and for preventing additional violence," Mamdani said. "The NYPD is conducting an internal investigation and will release body-worn camera footage, as it does in all incidents involving the discharge of an officer's firearm."
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said that the man, identified later as 44-year-old Anthony Griffin, had been " behaving erratically, repeatedly stating that he was 'Lucifer'." He had previously been arrested three times.
Shooting in New Jersey Chick-Fil-A leaves multiple wounded, one dead
In a separate incident on Saturday evening, several people were wounded, and one person was killed during a shooting at a Chick-fil-A in Union Township, New Jersey.
Former Roselle mayor Jamel Holley confirmed the incident in a post to X, adding that first responders and emergency crews are at the scene.
"Keep everyone in your prayers," his post concluded.
Local media reported a large police presence at the scene and noted that the investigation is ongoing.
Police have not yet confirmed whether any people were wounded or killed.
The partner of a Chick-fil-A employee told CBS News that a group of men entered the store, walked to the counter, and fired multiple shots, and the family of a second employee said that an altercation had taken place.
"I finished my trip over there, in the return zone. I heard the shots," ABC 7 Eyewitness News quoted a Lyft driver as saying. "When I finished the trip I go to Chick-fil-A to buy two burgers -- I see the police, I heard the shots very close."
