Providence police have detained a "person of interest" in connection with the Brown University shooting that left two students dead and another nine people wounded at the US Ivy League school.

Providence's Chief Public Information Officer for Public Safety, Kristy DosReis, told Reuters a person of interest was in police custody after the shooting.

Brown said in an advisory on Sunday that police had also lifted a shelter-in-place order for its campus in Rhode Island.

The eight injured victims were taken to a local hospital for treatment and are reportedly in stable condition. A ninth individual was lightly injured after being hit with bullet fragments.

The Providence Police Department and Brown University instructed individuals on and around the campus to shelter in place, lock their doors, and stay hidden until law enforcement officers arrived to escort them off campus.

The Providence Police, the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation, and additional law enforcement agencies are on scene investigating the incident and searching for suspects.

Providence police additionally released security camera footage of a "person of interest" in the investigation into the shooting.

Earlier, the university claimed that one suspect was taken into police custody before rescinding the statement and clarifying that the police are currently searching for one or more suspects.

The university confirmed that multiple exams were taking place on the campus at the time the shooting began at the Barus and Holley engineering building, and called for any individuals who were in the area at the time contact law enforcement.

Brown University President speaks out

The president of Brown University, Christina H. Paxson, released a statement expressing her sorrow following the shooting, as the campus is still on lockdown.

"This is a deeply tragic day for Brown, our families, and our local community," Paxton said. "We lost two community members today who were fatal victims of the shooting... Our hearts are with their families."

Paxton assured the Brown community that the Department of Public Safety has been working closely with local and federal law enforcement to deliver updates to the ongoing situation as they become available.

Additionally, she relayed that involved parties are "actively working to identify the community members who lost their lives, and are working with local hospitals to identify those transported for care."

Paxton encouraged all students, faculty, and staff to be in contact with their families as the campus remains on lockdown.
