The British Embassy in Cairo announced last week that it had temporarily closed its main building after Egyptian authorities removed concrete security barriers from the building’s exterior.
The barriers had surrounded the building for decades, according to CBS News.
"The main Embassy building is temporarily closed while we review the impact of works undertaken by the Egyptian authorities in the vicinity," a UK Foreign Office spokesperson told CBS News in a statement on Monday.
The embassy remains open, and only its main building is shut.
Pro-Palestinian protests target Egyptian missions
While the Egyptian authorities have not commented on the removal of the security barriers, multimedia agencies have noted that the decision came as tensions heated up between the Middle Eastern country and European nations on pro-Palestinian targeting Egyptian missions.
Pro-Palestinian protesters recently began targeting Egyptian embassies over the ongoing closure of the Rafah border.
The Egyptian authorities have argued that the protests are part of organized attacks against the country, and they have accused European host governments of failing to protect their embassy staff and diplomatic premises.
“If their governments won't provide adequate security for our missions, then we should reconsider our own deployments," Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty was reportedly heard saying.
