A 50-year-old man and his 13-year-old boy were seriously and moderately wounded in a vehicle explosion and fire in Jerusalem's Armon Hanatziv neighborhood on Tuesday, Israel Police and Magen David Adom said.

Jerusalem District police officers arrived at the scene, began collecting evidence, and opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion. Police said the background to the incident was believed to be criminal.

The man, believed to be convicted mobster Itzik Bar-Mucha, is a known figure in Jerusalem's criminal underworld and was apparently the target of the blast, according to Israeli media reports.

the man's name had been linked over the years to several well-known criminal cases and that he had been regarded as a highly significant and senior figure in Jerusalem's underworld.

MDA emergency medic Haki Har Kesef said medical teams arrived to find a vehicle on fire and debris scattered around it.

"Nearby were a man about 50 years old and a boy about 13 years old. They were conscious and suffering from burns and injuries to their bodies," Har Kesef said.

"We provided them with medical treatment and evacuated them in MDA intensive care ambulances to the hospital while continuing medical treatment."

This is a developing story.
