Three Palestinians were wounded during IDF operations in the area of Hebron in the West Bank on Friday, the military said on Saturday, after a soldier fired upon a vehicle accelerating towards him and other soldiers.

The wounded Palestinians were identified by the IDF as uninvolved civilians and were evacuated for medical treatment.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that two adults were injured and a seven-month-old baby was killed in the incident, though the death has not been confirmed by the IDF.

The baby's grandmother told Reuters that the family was driving near a checkpoint when they saw IDF vehicles and soldiers in the distance and stopped the car, initially believing that the shots fired were warning shots.

"One bullet struck my grandson, traversed his face and crossed his head, striking his mother's cheek where it lodged," she said.

She added that the bullet had also grazed the father's finger, and that the mother was in hospital.

The IDF stated that the incident is under review and expressed sorrow for the harm caused to innocent individuals.

Growing tensions at West Bank checkpoints

Tensions at West Bank checkpoints have increased in the past months following a number of car-ramming attacks aimed at IDF soldiers.

In May, police officers opened fire on the wheels of a vehicle that had been stolen from central Israel. The driver refused to pull over, crashed through a police checkpoint, and collided with a patrol car while attempting to cross into the West Bank.

After breaching the checkpoint and hitting the patrol car, the vehicle accelerated toward nearby IDF soldiers, who believed their lives were in danger and fired at the vehicle's tires.

In February, Israel Police announced the detention of a suspect being investigated for an attempted ramming incident that occurred at a checkpoint in the West Bank near Jerusalem.
