Police cancel Lag Ba'omer pilgrimage to Mount Meron

Israel Police announced on Sunday morning that Israel’s annual Lag Ba’omer pilgrimage at Mount Meron will not take place as originally planned, adding that routes leading to the tomb of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai would be blocked starting from that day, with additional routes closing on Monday. These routes will be closed until Wednesday, May 6, the police stated.

Nevertheless, Israel Police dispersed hundreds of civilians who entered Mount Meron on Monday, on the eve of Lag Ba'omer, in an attempt to light bonfires.

The Israel Fire and Rescue Services said it had prepared for possible incidents at the Mount Meron complex, with trucks and firefighters in position to assist in the event of a fire, even though such operations are banned under current security guidelines.
