Authorities named Tamar Gershoni as the suspect who allegedly plotted to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday.
Gershoni, a 74-year-old Tel Aviv resident, was arrested last Wednesday and indicted last Thursday for planning to harm Netanyahu with an explosive device.
The charges include attempted conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism.
An investigation by the Shin Bet revealed that Gershoni is an activist in protests against the government and Netanyahu. She is also a member of WhatsApp groups of some of the protestors.
Gershoni was looking for candidates to assist her on social media
Earlier this month, the Shin Bet managed to locate a message posted by the suspect in which she proposed a project to "intensify activity" against the government. In the message, she wrote that she was looking for candidates with "high physical fitness, military backgrounds, and knowledge of explosives."
While Gershoni’s name was not previously authorized for publication, her name and photo were permitted to be released on Thursday, though her maiden name would remain private. This decision came despite an appeal from her lawyers to prevent the publication of her name.
The Shin Bet declined to comment on the case, but stated that while it’s likely she intended to harm the prime minister, she had not yet reached a stage where she could execute the plan.
