An exploded occurred in the Bronx, New York City, injuring seven firefighters on Wednesday night.

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) received a call about a car fire and explosion in the Bronx, arriving to find "multiple cars and rubbish piles on fire," the department announced on X/Twitter.

Seven firefighters were injured by the explosion which occurred after they arrived at the scene, the FDNY confirmed.

Five of the firefighters suffered burns to the hands and face, with three being admitted to hospital. The "burns are considered serious, but non-life threatening," and all of the firefighters are "awake, alert, and speaking," FDNY said.

Police search for suspect as cause remains unclear

The New York Police Department is searching the area for a suspect, Yahoo! News reported. The cause of the explosion remains unclear.

No pedestrians were injured in the blast, according to the New York Post, citing NYPD officials.

The fire was under control approximately an hour after FNDY received their initial call, according to Fox News.
