Dutch politician Geert Wilders criticized and mocked France's decision to recognize a Palestinian state in a post on X/Twitter on Friday.
In the post, Wilders highlights the southeastern coastline of the country's Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in red, and writes: "Here will be the new Palestinian state. Big parts of France are already Islamic anyway."
"Good luck [French President] Emmanuel Macron and France! Happy suicide!" he addressed the French leader.
"The Netherlands will close its borders immediately," he concluded.
His post received over 65 thousand likes on X/Twitter as of early Saturday morning.
Official announcement of Palestinian statehood recognition in two months
Macron said he would announce at the United Nations General Assembly in September regarding France's recognition of a Palestinian state.
“The urgency today is to end the war in Gaza and to provide aid to the civilian population. Peace is possible,” he added. "It is essential to build the State of Palestine, ensure its viability, and enable it, by accepting its demilitarization and fully recognizing Israel, to contribute to the security of all in the Middle East."
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders issued strong condemnations towards Macron due to his recognition of a Palestinian state.
“We strongly condemn President Macron’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state next to Tel Aviv in the wake of the October 7 massacre. Such a move rewards terror and risks creating another Iranian proxy, just as Gaza became," Netanyahu said.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich wrote on X/Twitter, "I thank President Macron for providing an additional — and most compelling — reason to finally implement Israeli sovereignty over the historic regions of Judea and Samaria." Defense Minister Israel Katz called it “a disgrace and a surrender to terrorism.”
