Summary of Events Over Last Week
Australia paused on Thursday for an official National Day of Mourning in memory of the 15 people murdered in last month’s Bondi Beach Hanukkah massacre.
Flags were lowered to half-staff and millions of Australians participated in a minute of silence to honor the victims.
The solemn day was marred by the vandalism of a 155-year-old monument in Melbourne’s Flagstaff Gardens, including the spray-painting of a pro-Hamas symbol.
At a Waverley Council meeting last week, Mayor Will Nemesh called for a national reckoning on antisemitism in Australia in the aftermath of the Bondi Beach atrocity, saying, "Now is the time for action — to examine how such a devastating attack could occur, and to ensure that this never happens again."
