One of the things I remember most from the early 2000s is how fascinated I was by steam cleaners on QVC. I wasn’t a regular viewer—far from it—but every time I happened to channel-surf there, I found myself staying a minute longer, just to see how one jet of steam could erase stubborn layers of dirt and grease at an almost unbelievable speed. There was a sense of a TV trick, but one that worked well enough to make you think it might really be the solution for some areas in your home that require aggressive cleaning.
That curiosity never really disappeared, so when Karcher recently strengthened its presence in Israel and I received the Karcher SC5+Iron Kit for testing—a large model that also comes with an iron—it was a good opportunity to see whether a modern steam cleaner can really live up to all the promises I remembered from TV, or if it’s still mainly impressive in demonstrations rather than in real use.
Design, Comfort, and Accessories
As I hinted, the Karcher SC5+Iron Kit is not just a toy. It’s the largest and most powerful product in the company’s home steam cleaner line, and its design reflects that. The unit looks like an elegant combination of a compact vacuum and a small industrial machine, in classic white-gray with prominent yellow accents, Karcher’s signature colors. Weighing 6 kg and with substantial dimensions, it is slightly less agile than smaller devices, but the small wheels and built-in handle allow relatively easy mobility around the house.
What sets the SC5 apart and justifies its size is the dual-tank structure, which provides a significant advantage for continuous work: It consists of a main tank of 0.5 liters and a removable external reserve tank of 1.5 liters that continuously feeds the main tank. This allows uninterrupted operation since the reserve tank can be refilled at any time without losing steam power.
The SC5 kit is particularly comprehensive and includes a full arsenal for general cleaning. It comes with a wide floor kit (EasyFix) with a microfiber cloth and two 0.5-meter extension rods, a narrow nozzle accessory for cleaning tracks and corners, a round brush accessory for scrubbing tough dirt on small surfaces, and of course—a quality steam iron. The iron connects directly to the main unit instead of the regular gun, using the machine’s strong steam to, according to the company, halve ironing time. The device also includes a child safety mechanism and a 2.5-meter heat-resistant hose.
Performance Test: Steam That Makes the Difference
The gap between TV expectations and reality is usually large, but in the case of the Karcher SC5+Iron Kit, it seems the manufacturer seriously aimed to close that gap. Its technical specifications form the basis of its true power: With steam pressure of 4.2 bar, temperatures up to 140°C, and 2200W output, the machine is ready in just 3 minutes. These features, along with adjustable steam intensity and the Vapo-Hydro system, which allows mixing boiling water into the steam—a highly useful solution for breaking down stubborn dirt—ensured that the device entered the cleaning arena confidently.
I decided to give all my bathrooms a thorough cleaning. I started with the bathroom, where the battle is daily: Hardened limescale on faucets and the shower, greasy soap stains, and stubborn mold that, despite regular treatment, returns in the tile gaps. Using the small round brush and nozzle accessory, the steam simply dissolved the limescale and grease. Instead of tedious scrubbing with acidic descaler, the process became much easier and healthier, with the steam doing most of the work. Cleaning with high heat not only shines but also deeply sanitizes, which is very helpful in fighting mold.
The highlight was the kitchen. The oven, which had accumulated tough grease over a long period of cooking and had become an almost impossible task, was put to the test. After repeated attempts with strong chemical cleaners that did little but leave a sharp odor, I directed the concentrated steam nozzle at the black grease stains. Within seconds, the 140°C steam began dissolving the hardened grease, which simply drained away. Only a light wipe was needed, and the result was an oven interior shining like new.
In short, the machine’s ability to break down grease at this level without dangerous chemicals fully justifies the expectations I had.
Steam Iron: A Complementary Bonus with a Small Drawback
As mentioned, the Karcher SC5+Iron Kit comes with a quality steam iron, and it was time to test this bonus. Clearly, the iron itself is amazing—the steam power from the main unit makes ironing a completely different experience. In a single pass, hard and stubborn wrinkles disappeared impressively. This isn’t just a marketing promise: The iron truly reduces ironing time significantly.
However, convenience is the Achilles’ heel of this addition. For ironing, you must bring out the entire large steam unit, connect the iron instead of the regular gun, and only then start. This is not practical for quick daily use, especially compared to standalone irons. Therefore, the iron is less suitable for quickly ironing a single shirt. But for those regularly dealing with tricky fabrics that require strong steam, or for ironing large quantities, it’s undoubtedly a powerful and welcome addition that makes the device a versatile cleaning and maintenance tool.
Worth the Price?
After thoroughly testing the Karcher SC5+Iron Kit, it’s clear it doesn’t just promise—it delivers, and in a big way. This steam cleaner showed revolutionary cleaning abilities in every tough area at home, from burnt-on oven grease to the daily battle with limescale and mold in bathrooms. The dual-tank mechanism combined with high steam pressure (4.2 bar) allows continuous, efficient, and fast operation with almost no interruptions. The ability to clean surfaces deeply and hygienically, with minimal reliance on chemical cleaners, is undoubtedly its greatest advantage, saving not only money but also protecting health and the environment. Even the steam iron, despite being less practical for daily use due to the need to bring out the entire unit, is a powerful addition that will delight anyone ironing large amounts or delicate fabrics.
However, it is not a perfect device: The SC5 is relatively large and heavy (6 kg). While its net weight is significant, thanks to built-in wheels and the fact that most work is concentrated in a specific area (like the kitchen or bathroom), there’s no need to carry it excessively—just roll it from one area to another.
Ultimately, the bottom line comes down to price: The Karcher SC5+Iron Kit is currently sold at a recommended price of NIS 2,490. It’s certainly not a cheap steam cleaner and requires a significant initial investment. However, it’s important to note that Karcher also offers smaller models without additional extensions or accessories at much more affordable prices, starting from NIS 939 and NIS 1,290. For those seeking a truly deep and aggressive cleaning solution, willing to forgo chemicals, and with a relatively large home or need for continuous work capacity—the SC5 is the right investment.
