US President Donald Trump said on Friday he had canceled a previously expected second wave of attacks on Venezuela following cooperation from the South American nation.
Trump said the US and Venezuela were working well together, adding that at least $100 billion would be invested by the "big oil" companies in Venezuela.
He added, however, that all oil tankers in Venezuela "will stay in place for safety and security purposes."
Trump to meet with oil executives on Venezuelan oil
Trump had previously said he will meet with oil executives at the White House on Friday. Those oil companies, according to the president, will play a key role in rebuilding Venezuela's oil industry.
"They're going to rebuild the whole oil infrastructure. They're going to spend at least $100 billion and it's an unbelievable oil that they have, and an unbelievable quality of oil and amount of oil," he said.
Trump's statements come during a week of political turmoil in Caracas after the US ouster of President Nicolas Maduro, his arraignment in a New York court on narcoterrorism charges, swearing-in of interim President Delcy Rodriguez, and announcement that the US would refine and sell up to 50 million barrels of crude oil stuck in Venezuela under US sanctions.
